A Happy Christmas Away from Home

For many expats, Christmas season is the time of the year when they miss their home country and family the most. Celebrating Christmas away from home can be very lonesome and sad, but there are some things you could do to ease the homesickness and still have a happy and enjoyable Christmas.

Send Christmas cards, gifts and packages ahead of time

In order to avoid the Christmas rush and to make sure your packages arrive just in time, send them ahead of time. Of course, the gifts won’t be able to replace your physical presence but it will tell your family that you remember them the most during the holidays.

Spend time with new-found friends

Wherever you are, remember that you are not alone; there are many people who find themselves in the same situation as yours. Join your co-workers’ Christmas plans if they don’t mind, or join expat communities that might have special Christmas events and meet likeminded people. When you are happy, your family would be glad too knowing that you’re okay.

Attend a Christmas church service

If you’re in a country where Christmas is not widely celebrated, you can find people who have the common faith and beliefs, customs and traditions, and you can join together with them in a church service. You will be surprised to know that there are so many people like you and you will be comforted that you are not alone.

Be generous

Christmas is the perfect time for giving and sharing, although it should be done the whole year. Giving and sharing doesn’t only involve money but it can be of time and effort, such as volunteering in the local orphanages, homeless shelters or nursing homes. Share the love and you’ll receive much more!

Connect with your family

Call your family on the phone or turn on the webcam. You might not be there but you can join in as they celebrate Christmas day with the use of technology. Get to see your family’s activities and share the joy and laughter of the season.

Be thankful

Instead of mourning and complaining of your situation, be grateful for the blessings you have received. It is a time of thanksgiving to your creator and to the people who have become instruments for all the blessings. Remember that not everyone can experience the unique and enriching experience you have as an expat.
